How long does monkeypox persist on surfaces and clothing
Surviving the COVID-19 pandemic, you might wonder if monkeypox spreads as easily as COVID-19.
Monkeypox is currently on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) list of public health emergencies, along with COVID-19 and polio, but monkeypox is not normally an airborne virus. Monkeypox infection is caused by direct contact with infectious rashes, scabs, saliva, or respiratory droplets.
How is monkeypox transmitted? Is there a high risk of spreading through surfaces?
Monkeypox is acquired primarily through close skin-to-skin contact with an infectious skin lesion or contact with the saliva of an infected person.
Infection can occur through direct contact with contaminated materials such as clothing and linen.
The virus can be spread through respiratory secretions, but usually requires prolonged face-to-face contact with individuals with lesions in their mouths.
Fortunately, monkeypox virus is rarely found on surfaces, and even if virus particles are found on a surface or object, they are unlikely to cause infection.
“Although frequently touched surfaces must be constantly cleaned to eliminate exposure to bacteria and viruses, monkeypox is spread primarily through prolonged skin-to-skin contact,” she shares. How long can monkeypox live on surfaces?
There is no specific timeframe for how long the virus will survive on surfaces, but CDC sharing One study showed that it can survive for as long as 15 days under optimal conditions (dark, cool, low humidity). This does not mean that the virus is infectious in that time frame.
There are some simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your family from being infected by surfaces and objects.
- Clean and disinfect regularly
- Always use personal protective equipment when cleaning environments or handling laundry near infected persons – disposable gloves, mask, eye protection
- A simple detergent solution (hot water and soap) works well. Bleach or another type of disinfectant should then be applied to the surface.
- Common cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide or ethyl alcohol are also suitable for hard surfaces such as furniture and countertops.
- Wash breathable items such as bed sheets, linens and clothing separately with hot water and laundry detergent
- Do not recycle PPE after use. Throw it in the trash immediately.
- Always wash and disinfect your hands after cleaning or handling infected objects
“Even if the monkeypox virus is found on surfaces such as counters and doorknobs, the virus cannot be transmitted through these means,” Dr. Chicogna adds. “Please continue to practice the safety measures you are accustomed to during COVID-19, such as washing your hands and not sharing drinks or personal items.”
Dr. Cicogna adds that sexual contact is the biggest contributor. “If you have more than one sexual partner, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, you should watch out for monkeypox.”
