Monkeypox Relief Assistance Fund to Help Dallas County Residents
Abounding Prosperity, Inc. and the HOPE Health & Wellness Center have launched a new fund to help residents recover from the monkeypox virus with a variety of resources.
Dallas — As North Texas Residents Continue to Ask for Dose monkeypox vaccinethere are several community groups working to take public health and advocacy efforts one step further.
Kirk Myers-Hill, CEO of Abounding Prosperity, Incorporated in South Dallas, said:
Abounding Prosperity, Inc. and the HOPE Health & Wellness Center announced Wednesday an initiative to establish a monkeypox relief aid fund. Proceeds will provide emergency financial support and resources to Dallas County residents recovering from the monkeypox virus.
“Most of them don’t have 21 days to take time off work. In fact, I’ve had clients say, ‘I can’t take time off work.’ And we had to educate them about it,” Myers-Hill explained.
Abounding Prosperity, Inc. and HOPE Health were among the first community-based clinics to provide monkeypox vaccine in Dallas County. Myers-Hill said this is about fairness and reducing stigma.
However, despite daily medication being taken, staff said not enough people were taking their medication.
“With monkeypox, people have to quarantine for three to four weeks,” Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Omar Narvaez explained.
According to the latest data from the Dallas County Health and Human Services Service, 689 residents have confirmed cases of monkeypox. Most of them are men from he’s 30 to he’s 39. Black and Hispanic groups have the highest number of reported cases by race.
Myers-Hill said, “This community is under attack all the time, so we’re looking at ways we can respond more quickly.
The Monkeypox Relief Fund helps recovering residents with hot meals, rent and bill assistance, prevention kits, cleaning supplies, mental health resources, and more.
Atmos Energy supported this effort with a donation of $2,500.
