New cutting edge technology diagnoses heart failure in record time : The Tribune India

Scientists have developed a revolutionary technique that can cut the time it takes to find heart failure patients in half. This may help improve diagnosis and provide patients with more effective treatment.
Developed by researchers at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the UK, the technique utilizes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to create detailed four-dimensional (4D) flow images of the heart.
However, unlike traditional MRI, which can take 20 minutes or more, the new scanning technology takes just 8 minutes.
The results provide an accurate picture of the heart valves and blood flow within the heart, helping doctors determine the best course of treatment for their patients.
“Heart failure is a terrifying condition caused by increased pressure within the heart. Pankaj Garg, Chief Scientist at UEA, said.
“4D flow MRI allows us to see three directions, or four dimensions, of flow over time,” Garg said in a statement.
A study published in the journal European Radiology Experimental found that the best way to diagnose heart failure is by invasive assessment, which is not preferred due to the risks involved.
An ultrasound scan of the heart, called echocardiography, is routinely used to measure the peak velocity of blood flow through the heart’s mitral valve. However, this method may be unreliable, they said.
“This new technology is revolutionizing the way cardiac patients are diagnosed. However, it takes up to 20 minutes to perform a 4D flow MRI, and we know that patients do not like long MRI scans.” said UEA PhD student Hosamadin Assadi.
The research team investigated the reliability of a new technique for ultrafast scanning of flow in the heart called Kat-ARC.
“We found that this halved the scan time, taking about eight minutes. We also showed that this non-invasive imaging technique can accurately and accurately measure the peak velocity of blood flow in the heart.” Assadi said.
The team tested the new technology with 50 patients at two hospitals in Sheffield, UK. Patients with suspected heart failure were evaluated using the new Kat-ARC 4D Heart Flow MRI.
