CDC no longer recommends universal masking in healthcare facilities
(The Hill) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention no longer recommends universal masking in healthcare settings unless the facility is in an area with high COVID-19 transmission.
agent keep quiet update As part of an overhaul of infection control guidance for healthcare workers announced late Friday afternoon. This marks a major departure from the agency’s previous recommendations for universal masking.
The CDC’s new guidance states, “Updates have been made to reflect the high levels of immunity induced by vaccines and infections and the availability of effective treatment and prevention tools.
Now, the CDC says facilities in areas with low infection rates can “choose not to require” masks for all doctors, patients and visitors. Communication is different from the community level that CDC uses to guide non-medical settings.
Community transmission refers to a measure of the presence and spread of SARS-CoV-2, according to the CDC.
“This is the current recommendation to guide selected practices in health care settings to enable early intervention before the health system is overwhelmed and to better protect individuals seeking care in these settings. It’s a good indicator,” said the CDC.
About 73% of the United States is currently experiencing a “high” infection rate.
At the community level, “the emphasis is on measuring the impact of COVID-19 in terms of hospitalizations and health system burden while accounting for community transmission,” said the CDC.
Only 7% of counties are considered high risk and nearly 62% are considered low risk.
Additionally, the new guidance includes a list of exceptions when people may choose to mask, compared to the previous guidance which included a list of exceptions when masking was not recommended.
Even if masks are not universally required, health care providers working in some facilities with outbreaks of COVID-19 or caring for immunocompromised patients , must wear a mask.
If infection levels are high, masking is recommended for all persons in the healthcare setting when in areas of the healthcare facility where they may encounter patients.
Providers can choose not to wear a mask when in “clearly defined areas” where patient access is restricted, such as staff conference rooms.
Public health experts say the update will result in fewer people wearing masks in hospitals and nursing homes, putting patients and health care providers at risk.
Megan Raney, Dean of the School of Public Health at Brown University, said: murmured The new guidance reveals sick, untested patients for COVID-19 right next to the elderly, chemotherapy patients, people with lung disease, and vulnerable pregnant women, where there is substantial infection. It may bring about
“This nuanced approach has never worked during the pandemic. People hear, ‘No more masks!’ murmured Jerome Adams, who served as Chief of Surgeons in the Trump administration.
