People going through the loneliness stage are significantly more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, a new study finds. In addition, the researchers said they also investigated whether there is a link between depression and insomnia and illness.
Research published in Diabetologia (Journal of the European Diabetes Society) [EASD]), carried out by Associate Professor Roger E. Henriksen and colleagues at the West Norwegian University of Applied Sciences.
Studies show that loneliness creates a state of chronic and sometimes long-lasting distress that can activate the body’s physiological stress response. It is understood to develop due to transient insulin resistance caused by elevated levels of cortisol.
Loneliness also causes changes in our eating behavior. This increases your appetite for carbohydrates and subsequently raises blood sugar levels.
Previous research has found links between loneliness and unhealthy diets, such as increased consumption of sugary drinks and foods high in sugar and fat.
Of the 24,024 participants in the study, 1,179 (4.9%) developed T2D during the study period (1995-2019). These individuals were more likely to be male than those without T2D (59% vs. 44%) and had an older mean age (48 vs. 43 years). They were also more likely to be married (73% vs. 68%) and least educated (35% vs. 23%). Loneliness was reported by 13% of participants.
The study found that higher levels of loneliness at baseline were strongly associated with higher risk of T2D when measured 20 years later. After adjusting for age, gender, and education level, participants who answered ‘very’ when asked if they felt lonely were more likely to develop T2D than those who did not. It turns out that he is twice as tall.
Upon further analysis, the presence of depression, sleep onset insomnia, and terminal insomnia did not alter this relationship, but the researchers found evidence of an association with sleep maintenance insomnia. .
Although their study did not examine the exact mechanisms involved, the researchers note that social support, influence and engagement can have positive effects on health-promoting behaviors. For example, advice and support from friends can influence an individual’s health-related choices and have a positive impact on diet, physical activity levels, and overall feelings of stress. Lack of these positive influences may make lonely people more vulnerable to behavior and at increased risk of developing T2D.
