Chickens culled at Bury St Edmunds after bird flu outbreak

Chickens were culled near Bury St Edmunds amid further bird flu outbreaks in Suffolk and Norfolk.
Animal Health Officers have confirmed three more cases of bird flu. This brings the total number of outbreaks in the two counties to 12.
On Saturday 1 October, an outbreak was confirmed near Bury St Edmunds.
Government veterans also confirmed that a highly virulent strain of bird flu had infected commercial poultry at two different facilities near Attleborough.
It is understood that over 10,000 turkeys and over 2,500 geese will need to be disposed of at one of the facilities, and 8,500 breeding ducks will need to be disposed of at the other site.
Defra says all infected on-site poultry will be humanely culled and a 3km ‘protection zone’ and 10km ‘monitoring zone’ will be enforced around the site.
A previous outbreak had already been spotted at another Bury St Edmunds facility, while other Suffolk cases have been confirmed near Lowestoft, Hadley and Honington, where two facilities were affected. .
The new outbreak is the latest blow to the East Anglian poultry industry, with 12 confirmed cases in Norfolk and Suffolk since the beginning of September.
Thousands of chickens, geese and turkeys were killed, and wild bird colonies were also hit.
Last week, new restrictions were introduced for all poultry breeders, from commercial farms to backyard enthusiasts.
