Here’s where to get your flu shot in St. Louis.
Health officials are encouraging people in St. Louis to get their annual flu shot before the season can get serious. Several hospitals and health departments are offering free flu shot clinics through October, and many are getting free vaccinations.
Early October is the best time for people to get the flu vaccine, according to Kristin Helton, pharmacy manager at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. That’s late enough to provide immunity that lasts until spring, but early enough to provide protection early in the season.
“We think that’s the sweet spot because it lasts you and actually protects you until April, which is our flu season timeframe,” she said. .
Health officials may be able to predict how severe the flu season will be by looking at how many people in Australia and other countries in the Southern Hemisphere have gotten sick, Helton said. The season could signal that the US has entered winter in earnest.
For many people, immunity may be weakened after years of COVID-19 precautions, Helton said.
“People weren’t getting infected, but they weren’t building immunity either. We might have a higher infection rate this year,” she said.
Helton said the COVID-19 booster shot and flu vaccine can be given at the same time, but she recommends one in each arm to help control pain.
She said interest in flu vaccines is down this year COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters the past year.
Still, flu vaccines are the best way to prevent serious flu-related illness and prevent the spread of infection to more vulnerable people.
Here’s where to get your flu shot this month in the St. Louis area.
BJC Healthcare will provide flu shots ahead of Tuesday’s Blues game against the Minnesota Wild. The health system provides clinics on Saturdays at Burns Jewish West County in Cleve Coeur and at Christian Hospital in North St. Louis County on Sundays. Another clinic will be held at Northwest HealthCare in Florissant on his October 13th. Reservations are required.
SSM Health is offering free drive-thru clinics on Saturdays from 8am to noon at St. Clair’s Hospital in Fenton, DePaul Hospital in St. Louis, and Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. Everyone over the age of 9 is eligible to get the flu vaccine. The Cardinal-Glennon Clinic vaccinates people over the age of 6 months.
St. Charles County is offering a drive-in flu shot clinic at St. Charles Community College in Cottleville on October 21 from 2:30pm to 7:00pm.health department Patients are advised to make an appointment. This flu clinic also offers high-dose flu vaccine options for those 65 and older.
