“There may be an epidemic of influenza this winter.”
Operators of many Covid immunization centers have warned Hong Kong could see a spike in influenza this winter and urged people to get the flu vaccine to reduce the impact of the virus.
Dr Samuel Kwok of Virtus Medical Group told RTHK on Thursday that wearing masks during the pandemic means that exposure to the flu virus has decreased over the past few years.
However, he believes the flu is likely to return to Hong Kong once people resume travel to places in the world where masks are not required.
The government’s flu vaccination program begins Thursday. Anyone under the age of 12 or over her 50s is eligible for a free jab. This will be available at local immunization centers at the same time as the Covid jabs.
“As we enter the winter season, we expect to see a wave of flu,” Kwok said.
“During the pandemic, mask use prevented many contagious infections, so we’ve seen the flu thrive. People aren’t exposed to the flu virus, so if we come back here it’ll spike. There is a possibility.”
Kwok added that reactions to flu shots from allergies are very rare, and that it’s safe to get flu and Covid vaccinations at the same time.
Meanwhile, CEO John Lee urged the public to get flu shots, as he and some key officials had been vaccinated against them.
He said getting a flu shot is especially important this year.
“The Covid-19 epidemic and the series of epidemic prevention measures implemented over the past two years or so have resulted in relatively low levels of seasonal influenza activity in the region and reduced overall immunity to influenza in the community. I did,” he said.
