“This study will enable a contactless, easy-to-use, low-cost test that can be performed routinely anywhere in the world, allowing clinicians to monitor patients remotely,” said Kumar.
The app could also facilitate community-wide screening programs, researchers say, reaching out to people who might otherwise not seek treatment until it’s too late. The results of this research have been published in the IEEE Journal of Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine, IEEE Access, and Computers in Biology and Medicine.
Parkinson’s voice is affected by a combination of three symptoms: stiffness, tremor, and dullness. Expert clinicians can identify these symptoms, but this assessment can be difficult due to the large natural differences in human voices.
Kumar said previous attempts to develop computerized voice assessments to detect Parkinson’s disease were inaccurate due to these large differences in people’s voices. Three sounds A, O, and M were uttered using voice recordings of a controlled group of Parkinson’s patients and so-called healthy people.
“These sounds lead to more accurate detection of disease,” Kumar added.
“Patients with symptoms of lung disease from COVID-19 also have voice changes due to lung infection,” he said.
Researchers noted that lung disease is difficult to recognize in its early stages because people’s voices vary widely. This limitation can be overcome by the same her selection of three sounds and an AI analysis method developed by researchers.
Prior to use, the system is trained to identify diseases. Once training is complete, an immediate analysis of the audio is performed. The software then compares the results to existing samples of voices from people with and without Parkinson’s disease. RMIT engineering collaborator Quoc Cuong Ngo says the new technology is faster and outperforms his similar AI-based approach.
“Our screening test app can measure very accurately how the voices of people with Parkinson’s disease or who are at high risk of hospitalization due to COVID-19 differ from healthy people,” he said. .
Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative brain disorder that is difficult to diagnose because symptoms vary from person to person. Common symptoms include sluggishness, tremors, stiffness, and loss of balance. Currently, the disease is diagnosed through an assessment by a neurologist, which takes up to 90 minutes.
