COVID-19 pandemic impacted HIV cases, resources and treatment in the US, report says

San Francisco (KGO) — A new report finds that the COVID-19 pandemic is having a negative impact on the number of people living with HIV in the country.

Access to HIV testing and treatment was temporarily suspended as the focus focused on fighting the pandemic.

The headline is what many feared. New HIV infections in San Francisco increased for the first time in nine years.

First of all, HIV clinics were forced to close at the peak of the pandemic.

Monica Gandhi, M.D., medical director of the HIV Clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, said:

Numbers are a concern. HIV testing dropped 97% during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“If they haven’t been tested for HIV, whether they’re positive or negative, knowing their HIV status will see the impact,” said Chanel McGoy of Gilead Sciences.

As a result, 17% fewer people were diagnosed with HIV in 2020 than in 2019.

San Francisco AIDS Foundation’s Vincent Crisostomo said: “The challenges have resulted in a drop in testing and an inability to achieve zero cases. We’re trying to get it back.

Without testing, many people cannot start PREP, which is given daily to prevent HIV.

“I have seen a significant number of undiagnosed terminal AIDS patients admitted to hospitals, so now is a very important time to bring testing up. Testing is very important for HIV.” Gandhi said.
