LEXINGTON, Kentucky (WKYT) – Health officials fear this flu season could be the worst in years.
Here in the states, health leaders tend to look to the Southern Hemisphere to gauge the severity of seasonal illnesses such as influenza, and signs from Australia are less optimistic.
Kevin Hall of the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department says this could be the year the flu reappears from the shadows of COVID-19.
“We have to look back at how this was in 2018 and 2019,” said Kevin Hall of the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department. “The flu was serious then. It’s still serious.”
Data from Australia show just that.
There are more laboratory-confirmed influenza cases than at any time since 2017. This means that we will see more flu cases than we have seen in the last five years.
Hall says these test-confirmed cases don’t tell the whole story because not everyone goes to the hospital to be tested for the flu.
“At the peak of flu season, I would go on social media and look at these caregivers and talk about how many cases they were seeing, how many students were out, how many family members were sick. “Look at these teachers who are doing it,” said Hall. “Here you can see the real picture of what we are facing. Whether it is the flu or COVID-19, there are people showing symptoms. So many that they go to work, go to school, and risk spreading this to others.
Hall says the best way to stay safe is to get vaccinated, wear a mask, practice social distancing, and stay home if you’re sick.
All of these precautions have led to a dramatic drop in flu cases during the pandemic, which could help limit cases this year.
The Lexington Fayette County Health Department is hosting a flu vaccination clinic at the United Baptist Church on Thursday, October 13, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. You can book online through the Department of Health website.
You can also make an appointment for a flu shot at the Public Health Clinic at the Department of Health on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
