Denton County Encourages Residents to Get Flu Vaccinated – Cross Timbers Gazette | Southern Denton County | Flower Mound
Denton County Public Health said in a news release last week that it is encouraging community members to get the flu vaccine to protect themselves and others by the end of October.
According to the DCPH, during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, preventative measures like the flu vaccine can help reduce the chances of getting sick and reduce demand on health care providers and hospitals throughout the flu season. Although the severity of each flu season in Denton County can be unpredictable, seasonal flu activity tends to start increasing in the fall and peak from December through February.

“While COVID numbers are declining, we cannot ignore the seasonal flu. It keeps you healthy all season long,” said DCPH Director Matt Richardson, PhD. “It’s important to remember that it takes two weeks for flu vaccines to be effective in preventing flu. Get your flu vaccine now so you don’t have to worry about it later.”
DCPH recommends three approaches to fighting influenza.

Wearing a mask, washing and sanitizing your hands frequently, and staying home when you’re not feeling well can help prevent many respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, the flu, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
DCPH reminds residents that immunization is a community initiative that protects not only themselves, but their families, friends and those around them. Everyone 6 months and older should get the flu vaccine every flu season. Immunization also helps protect those most at risk of complications and death from influenza.

- People living in nursing homes
- Non-Hispanic Blacks, Hispanics or Latinos, and Native Americans and Alaskan Natives
- Persons with chronic health conditions such as asthma, neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders, chronic lung disease, heart disease, diabetes, weakened immune system due to illness or medication, kidney or liver disorders, or persons who are extremely obese.
