FDA approves use of whooping cough during pregnancy to protect newborns

On Friday, the Food and Drug Administration approved a vaccine for use during the third trimester of pregnancy to prevent whooping cough in newborns.
A vaccine called Boostrix is made by GlaxoSmithKline. This is the first injection the FDA has approved for use during pregnancy to prevent illness in young infants by injecting it into the mother, said Dr. Peter Marks, the FDA’s chief vaccine officer. .
Data evaluated by the FDA show that a single dose of this vaccine was 78% effective in preventing pertussis in newborns when given to mothers during the third trimester of pregnancy. No side effects were observed in pregnancy, fetuses, or neonates.
The most common side effects in vaccinated people are injection site pain, headache, and fatigue.
Whooping cough, more commonly known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can cause serious health complications in babies. Not old enough to be protected by the usual childhood series of vaccinations against the disease.
