Weekly dengue cases down about 70% from May peak: Baey Yam Keng
SINGAPORE – Weekly dengue cases have plummeted by about 70% from their peak in May, but residents must continue to work together to prevent a second surge in dengue fever this year.
Baey Yam Keng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and Environment, who provided an update on the dengue situation on Monday, also said about 95% of dengue clusters had been closed.
In a statement on Monday, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said 427 dengue cases were reported last week, 46 fewer than the previous week.
This brings the total number of dengue cases to 28,500 by 7 October. He has nine deaths from dengue so far this year, compared to his five last year.
The NEA announced on 30 September that 142 dengue clusters had been reported up to 7 October.
In May, the weekly number of dengue cases was about 1,500.
Bayi said the NEA has brought forward the start of a nationwide dengue prevention campaign on March 30 to curb an early dengue outbreak in Singapore.
The campaign put up dengue warning banners in areas with high populations of the dengue-spreading Aedes aegypti mosquito, encouraging people to take proactive mosquito precautions.
Regular inspections were also conducted to remove mosquito breeding grounds to further reduce the risk of dengue infection.
To complement existing dengue control efforts, the NEA will: Since July, eight more field sites have begun releasing male Wolbachia aedes aegypti. – The total number of Wolbachia sites is now 13.
Bayey participated in a male Wolbachia mosquito release exercise at McPherson’s site on Monday.
This is one of eight new locations, including Punggol and Sengkang, where these mosquitoes are released.
Project Wolbachia has expanded to cover approximately 31% of all Housing Commission blocks in Singapore, including the latest batch with an additional 1,400 HDB blocks.
