Three New York neighborhoods are flu hotspots with 600 infected people now
Rochester, NY – So far, New York state has recorded 600 flu cases less than two weeks after the official start of the season. News10NBC spoke to a local doctor who warns against waiting to get vaccinated. Doctors say it takes about a week after getting the flu shot for it to work.
“We are expecting a flu pandemic this year and want to be prepared for that,” said Dr. William Valenti of Trillium Health. He says it means getting vaccinated, especially since there are concerns about new flu strains.
“They warn people to be prepared because they will be traveling in close contact with each other. That kind of virus spreads very quickly. , is highly contagious and harmful to unvaccinated people,” said Valenti.
News10NBC spent some time on Park Avenue on Monday to see if people were making time to take pictures.
“Definitely it’s prevention, I want to be healthy and I don’t want side effects,” Maria Paris said.
Margaret Talmadge adds: I’m still on the fence It may or may not, but yeah that’s what I’m considering. I just, yeah, I haven’t made that decision yet. “
New York City, the Capital District, and central New York are the current flu hotspots, according to doctors. So far, there have been 600 confirmed cases statewide.
“This is a good time to get the flu vaccine and we don’t have to wait,” Dr. Valenti said. He continued, “Many people want to wait until later in the season because flu vaccine protection doesn’t always last all year, but it may be a little shorter. There is an idea that sometimes we want to be able to protect, and now is the time to do it.”
No flu deaths have been reported locally this season, according to Dr. Valenti.
