Study Finds CT and MRI Scans Fail to Detect Many Pancreatic Cancer Cases

Study Finds CT and MRI Scans Fail to Detect Many Pancreatic Cancer Cases

Tumors in pancreatic cancer are missed by CT and MRI scans, narrowing the possibility of life-saving surgery, according to a study presented today at UEG Week 2022.

This study analyzed cases of post-imaging pancreatic cancer (PIPC) in which the patient underwent an imaging test that was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer after an unsuccessful diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

Results reveal that more than one-third (36%) of PIPC cases may be avoidable, demonstrating the low detection rate of cancers that are concerning for patient outcomes.

British researchers examined the records of 600 patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer between 2016 and 2021. Of these, 46 (7.7%) patients had no cancer diagnosis at the first scan, but from 3 months he had a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer 18 months later. .

CT and MRI images were independently reviewed by radiologists to develop an algorithm to classify missed cases and identify the most likely explanation for the missed reason.

Because the duration of radical surgery for pancreatic cancer is often very short, it is important that the disease is diagnosed as early as possible to maximize the chances of survival for the patient. The study found that evidence of pancreatic cancer was initially overlooked in more than one-third of her post-imaging pancreatic cancer patients. This is a big window of lost opportunity. ”

Dr Nosheen Umar, lead author of the study, University of Birmingham, UK

Nearly half (48%) of PIPC patients screened had signs of cancer that were missed when the scans were reviewed by an expert hepatobiliary radiologist. In his 28% of patients with PIPC, imaging signs associated with pancreatic cancer, such as bile or dilated pancreatic ducts, were not recognized and were investigated further.

“We hope this study will raise awareness of the post-imaging issues of pancreatic cancer and the common reasons why pancreatic cancer may be missed in the first place,” explained Dr. Umar. . “This will help standardize future studies on this issue and guide quality improvement efforts, thus increasing the chances of early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, increasing the chances of patient survival, and ultimately can save lives.”

Pancreatic cancer, which kills 95,000 people in the EU each year, has the lowest survival rate of all cancers in Europe, with a life expectancy of only 4.6 months at diagnosis. By 2035, the number of pancreatic cancer cases is projected to increase by almost 40%.

Many patients are diagnosed at a late stage because the disease often presents with vague early symptoms, making early recognition difficult. Symptoms include jaundice, abdominal and back pain, unexplained weight loss, and nausea. Also, the complex nature of the disease makes it difficult to perform screening for early diagnosis.
