New Zealand confirmed nine new cases of community-acquired monkeypox.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the current outbreak to 20, both active and recovering.

In a statement, Te Fatu Ora and the Ministry of Health said seven of the new cases were in Tamaki Makaulau and two in the Wellington area.

Officials said last week’s rise in cases was not unexpected and that the rise in monkeypox cases in New Zealand reflected trends abroad.

Anyone can get monkeypox, they said, but abroad it mainly affects the male community who has sex with men and the people who have sex with men who have sex with men.

But the general risk of contracting the disease in New Zealand remained low, they said.

Public health departments, primary care facilities and sexual health clinics have been given advice to help identify cases and manage cases and contacts.

“We are also working closely with our community partners to ensure that at-risk communities have the information and resources they need to mitigate the risk of contracting MPX. [monkeypox].”

Testing for monkeypox is free and does not charge patients to see their doctor, health care provider, or sexual health clinic.
