Pediatricians like Subrahmanian are warning families about rhinovirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), the most common causes of pneumonia in children under the age of one.
“Our RSV season usually starts in November, December and runs through March. This year we saw a lot of hospitalizations in September, and it continues,” Subrahmanian said.
In the Twin Cities metropolitan area, there were 103 hospitality cases for RSV in September, 52 in August and 48 in July, according to recommendations recently sent to health care providers by the Minnesota Department of Health. .
Over the last two years, the level of respiratory illness has decreased as children have stayed home and families have taken COVID-19 precautions. Right now, Minnesota is experiencing pre-pandemic levels, if not more.
“We are back in the season of busy breathing,” Subrahmanian said. “Every parent, every family, every pediatrician knows our winter season is always busy. So I think it will be worse than it has been in years in terms of the spread of different viruses.”
Doctors also expect flu activity to increase this year, but it remains to be seen how bad COVID-19 will be. They are asking people to get vaccinated against both, especially since there is no RSV vaccine.
“(RSV) may start out as a cold, but we know these can be life-threatening illnesses, especially for children under the age of 1 year and under 6 months.
State health officials recommend that parents keep their children out of daycare if they are sick, even if they test negative for COVID-19. Seek medical attention if you have trouble breathing or are unable to stay hydrated.
