Central Indiana hospitals overwhelmed by surge in RSV cases
Hospitals in central Indiana say RSV cases are rising sharply.
INDIANAPOLIS — RSV is a virus that makes headlines every year, but this year is anything but typical.
Kay Sikting, Ph.D., Pediatric ICU Medical Director, Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, said:
They, like many other hospitals, have been overwhelmed by the surge.
“RS virus is being seen earlier and in higher numbers than usual,” Sichting said.
Lafayette’s Kelsi Clark said her son Cooper’s run-in to the virus began Wednesday.
“He’s six months old, so I was really scared,” Clark said. “I had to pick my son up from daycare with a fever. I took him from daycare to emergency care and had him tested and he tested positive.”
This resulted in an overnight stay at IU Health’s Arnett Hospital.
“They informed us last night that they couldn’t keep us because he wasn’t getting the proper care he needed,” Clark said. I tried to take him to every hospital that had a pediatric ICU, but he stayed away from every hospital because there weren’t enough beds.”
Cooper was taken to a hospital in Louisville by an IU Health Lifeline helicopter.
“We’ve been treated in the emergency department, but this children’s hospital has been full for months,” Clark said.
Cooper continues to fight while Mom and Dad wait for a room.
“He’s on oxygen and he’s on respiratory therapy and steroids,” Clark said.
The recent surge is stressing both mothers and hospitals.
“This variant of RSV, like the flu variant, can be worse than others,” said Sichting. “This variant of RSV could be worse.”
