A cancer vaccine could be available by 2030 following the success of the Covid mRNA jab
The husband and wife team behind one of the most successful Covid jabs says cancer vaccines could be accessible to patients within the next decade.
A male couple, Ugur Sahin and Ozlem Tureci, are hesitant to say they can find a cure for cancer, but said they had a “breakthrough” and will continue to work.
They said the development and success of the Pfizer/Biontech vaccine against Covid-19, which was widely deployed in the pandemic, would “reward our cancer research.”
The couple, who were interviewed on the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg program on Sunday, co-founded BioNTech in Mainz, Germany in 2008 and have pioneered personalized cancer immunotherapy.
Their use of mRNA technology has proven its worth during the pandemic, and the couple said the experience helped spur their work.
Conventional vaccines are manufactured using attenuated viruses, but the mRNA uses only the viral genetic code.
An mRNA vaccine is injected into the body where it enters cells and tells them to make antigens. Antigens are recognized by the immune system and prepared to fight disease.
Asked when many patients around the world would have access to cancer vaccines, Professor Sahin said it could happen “before 2030.”
Professor Tulechi told Kuensberg: “Decades of development for cancer vaccine development have been a tailwind for Covid-19 vaccine development, and now our experience with Covid-19 vaccines and their development It’s giving back to cancer research.”
She added: “This will definitely accelerate our cancer vaccines as well.”
