Washtenaw County Health Department encourages COVID-19 boosters and flu shots for fall
Ypsilanti – With the cold months and holiday parties just around the corner, it’s time for flu shots and COVID-19 boosters.
Washtenaw County Health Department (WCHD) officials are encouraging community members to stay up-to-date on COVID-19 booster vaccines and flu shots to protect their own health and the health of others.
“COVID-19 is still circulating in the community, heading into flu season,” said Dr. Juan Marquez, WCHD’s medical director, in a release. “Vaccination can prevent serious illness, hospitalization and death from influenza and COVID-19, while also reducing the overall spread of the disease in a community. It also protects those around you, including those who are more vulnerable, such as babies and young children, the elderly, and those with chronic health conditions.”
The annual flu vaccine is recommended for people 6 months and older.The CDC recommends getting the vaccine by the end of October.
Many flu cases and hospitalizations were recorded from April to June this summer, officials said. Two hospitalizations have already been reported since September 25, when the 2022-2023 flu season began, according to WCHD. Dashboard.
As of October 3, more than 130,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to community members. Anyone over the age of 5 who has completed his first COVID-19 vaccine series may also receive a booster dose.
Officials said the updated bivalent booster would protect against two strains of the coronavirus.
“While the COVID-19 vaccine remains highly protective in preventing the worst consequences of COVID, we know that the effectiveness of the vaccine may decline over time.” It’s important for people to stay up-to-date on the COVID-19 vaccine, and the longer it’s been since their last dose, the more important it is to ensure a boost.”
WCHD will be holding a COVID-19 booster drive at 555 Towner St. in Ypsilanti on Thursday from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm.
No reservations are required, but community members must be in line by 3pm to receive their boost. Please bring your health insurance card with you.
