Less than 5 hours of sleep increases risk of multiple chronic diseases
A longitudinal study from the United Kingdom showed that people who reported getting less than five hours of sleep per night were at increased risk of multiple chronic diseases in the future.
Healthy 50-year-olds who slept 5 hours or less per night had a 30% higher risk of future multimorbidity over 25 years than those who slept 7 hours (HR 1.30, 95% CI 1.12-1.50, P.<0.001), according to Dr. Séverine Sabia, University of Paris and University College London, and co-authors.
Short sleep duration at age 60 years (HR 1.32, 95% CI 1.13-1.55, P.<0.001) and 70 (HR 1.40, 95% CI 1.16-1.68, P.<0.001) was also associated with higher multimorbidity risk, researchers reported PLoSmedicine.
“The importance of sleep has been shown for certain diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes,” Sabia said. Today’s Medpage. “However, in real life, chronic illness is often comorbid in older age. Whether sleep duration is associated with multiple illnesses, and whether this association is similar according to age at sleep measurement,” said Dr. was unknown.”
“Sleep plays an important role in regulating body functions, including regulating the endocrine, metabolic and inflammatory systems,” Sabia said. “When dysregulated, these functions are associated with increased risk of chronic disease.”
Researchers followed 7,864 participants. Whitehall II The cohort is an ongoing prospective study established in 1985 among UK civil servants. Participants were free of multiple diseases at baseline. About one-third (32.5%) were female and 90.1% were Caucasian.
Self-reported sleep duration was assessed six times between 1985 and 2016. For this analysis, sleep duration data was extracted at ages 50, 60, and 70. 3,589 had him sleep 7 hours, 1,092 had 8 hours, and 77 had more than 9 hours.
Multimorbidity includes diabetes, cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, liver disease, depression, dementia, other psychiatric disorders, Parkinson’s disease, and arthritis.
≥9 hours of sleep at age 60 (HR 1.54, 95% CI 1.15-2.06, P.=0.003) and 70 years (HR 1.51, 95% CI 1.10-2.08, P.=0.01) was associated with the incidence of multimorbidity, but not at age 50 years (HR 1.39, 95% CI 0.98-1.96, P.= 0.07).
During a mean follow-up period of 25.2 years, 4,446 developed primary chronic disease, 2,297 progressed to multiple diseases, and 787 subsequently died.
Sleeping less than 5 hours at age 50 was associated with an increased risk of first chronic disease (HR 1.20, 95% CI 1.06-1.35, P.=0.003) and subsequent multiple disease but no mortality. Sleeping 9 hours or more was not associated with these changes.
Accelerometer data were available for a group of 3,920 participants in the 2012 evaluation. “The shape of the association between accelerometer-assessed sleep duration and emerging multimorbidity was similar to that observed for self-reported sleep duration,” Sabia and colleagues note. increase.
Limitations included the use of self-reported sleep data, the possibility of reverse causality, and the small proportion of non-white participants in the study. Employed and possibly healthier than the rest of the population.
“Over the past decade, it has been observed that people tend to sleep less,” Sabia noted.
“We listen to our bodies and eat when we’re hungry,” she said. “It’s also important to go to bed when it feels right, and to develop habits that promote good sleep.”
