‘Triple threat’ disease causing sick children to overwhelm hospitals nationwide prompts warning from Dr. Anthony Fauci

San Francisco (KGO) — With respiratory illnesses rising rapidly among children, President Joe Biden’s top medical adviser warns of a potential triple threat heading into winter.

“This is particularly problematic because, as we enter flu season, three serious respiratory illnesses in children can converge at once,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci. “There is always concern about the RSV you just mentioned, the flu and, of course, the surge in new variants of COVID-19 as we enter winter.”

Hospitals in 43 states, including California, told ABC7 News they are grappling with an early influx of flu, RSV and other respiratory illnesses.

Dr. Peter Chin-Hong is an infectious disease specialist at UCSF. He said the lifting of COVID restrictions was one of several possible reasons for the rise.

“In fact, many children have had COVID recently, and if you have had COVID recently, your immune system may be more responsive if you see another respiratory infection,” Chin said. -Dr. Hong said. “It’s not proven, but it’s another hypothesis people have proposed.”

The CDC reports that the age group most vulnerable to flu-like illness is children under the age of five.

The kids are like 1 year old Hayden in Texas.

“It was very moving,” Tiffany Peaco said. Her 1-year-old son, Hayden, was hospitalized for her week with RSV.

“I’m sleep deprived. As I sit here listening to my alarm go off, he’s desaturated with oxygen and a nurse comes running to adjust his oxygen. It’s very was difficult.”

Dangerous signs of respiratory illness include rapid or labored breathing, dilated nostrils, blue or discolored facial skin indicating lack of oxygen, dry mouth and wet diapers. Includes dehydration.
