World Polio Day: ‘Vaccination is key’ to keep Australia polio-free
According to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia hasn’t seen a case of wild poliovirus in years, but that doesn’t mean the crisis is over. Associate Professor Bruce SoreyDirector of the WHO Polio Regional Reference Laboratory at the Doherty Institute.
It has been more than 50 years since Australia recorded its last case of locally transmitted polio, but until recently the virus had been detected in only a few countries. Global Polio Eradication Initiativewas started in 1988.
