Sophia Antipolis, October 28,: Two minutes of vigorous activity for a total of 15 minutes a week can reduce the risk of death, according to a study released today. European Heart Journal, Journal of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).1

“The results show that accumulating brisk activity in short bouts over the course of a week can help us live longer,” said study author Matthew N. Dr. Ahmadi says, “Given that lack of time is the most commonly reported barrier to regular physical activity, sporadically accumulating small amounts during the day can be beneficial for busy people.” It may be a particularly attractive option.

A second study was also released today. EJJfound that for a given amount of physical activity, increasing intensity reduced the likelihood of cardiovascular disease.2 “Our study shows that it’s not just amount of activity that is important for cardiovascular health, but also intensity,” said study authors Paddy C. Dempsey, PhD, University of Leicester, University of Cambridge, UK, and Baker University. said. Heart and Diabetes Institute, Melbourne, Australia.

Both studies included adults aged 40-69 from the UK Biobank. The participant wore an activity tracker on her wrist for seven consecutive days. It is an objective method for measuring movement, especially sporadic activity of varying intensity during the day.

The first study enrolled 71,893 adults without cardiovascular disease or cancer. The median age he was 62.5 years old and 56% were female. Researchers measured the total amount of brisk activity each week and the frequency of bouts lasting two minutes or less. Participants were followed for an average of 6.9 years. After excluding events that occurred in the first year, the researchers compared the amount and frequency of active activity with mortality (all-cause, cardiovascular disease and cancer) and the incidence of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Analyzed relationships.

As the amount and frequency of vigorous activity increased, the risk of all five adverse outcomes decreased, and benefits were seen even at low doses. There was a 4% risk of dying. The risk was halved to 2% for less than 10 minutes of vigorous activity each week and decreased to 1% for 60 minutes or more.

Compared to just two minutes of vigorous activity per week, 15 minutes of activity was associated with an 18% lower risk of death, a 15% lower risk of cardiovascular disease, and a 17% lower risk of cancer for 12 minutes. Further benefits were observed with higher amounts of brisk activity. For example, approximately 53 minutes of physical activity per week was associated with a 36% lower risk of death from any cause.

In terms of frequency, an average of 4 bouts of vigorous exercise per day (up to 2 minutes) was associated with a 27% lower risk of death. However, health benefits were observed at an even lower frequency: 10 short bouts per week reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer by 16% and 17%, respectively.

A second study included 88,412 adults without cardiovascular disease. The median age he was 62 years old and 58% were female. Researchers estimated the amount and intensity of physical activity and analyzed its association with cardiovascular disease (ischemic heart disease or cerebrovascular disease). Participants were followed for a median of 6.8 years.

Researchers found that both higher volume and greater intensity were associated with a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease. decreased to For example, when moderate-to-vigorous activity accounted for 20% of activity instead of 10%, the incidence of cardiovascular disease was 14% lower. This is equivalent to converting a 14 minute walk into a 7 minute brisk walk.

Dr. Dempsey said: Increasing intensity was also particularly important, but it was optimal to increase both. For example, increasing the pace of your daily walk to the bus stop or completing household chores faster. ”
