According to Blasé, their symptoms range from fever, coughing, fatigue and ear pain. On one occasion, her daughter wheezed and she was absent from school for a whole week. She alternated between Tylenol and ibuprofen to treat her symptoms.

“It was kind of a watch,” she said. “I just watched it to make sure it didn’t get worse.”

RSV can infect people of all ages, but it is more serious in young children and older adults (groups with weaker lungs). It generally begins with cold symptoms in the head, but can affect the lungs.

“When we go from upper to lower respiratory tract, we start worrying a little more and taking more precautions,” said Subramanian.

Subrahmanian said the child should be taken to the doctor if the child has trouble breathing, is breathing heavily, has visible ribs or is unable to hydrate. A person suffering from RSV may need additional oxygen and hydration for 3 to 5 days until his lungs recover.

There is a nasal swab test for RSV, but no vaccine. Most people recover well after a week or two, even in more severe cases, Subrahmanian said.
