Lack of sleep linked to glaucoma in new study
People who suffer from sleep deprivation are prone to common eye ailments later in life.
Snoring, daytime sleepiness, insomnia, and too little or too much sleep are linked to increased risk of glaucoma in a new large-scale study.
Glaucoma is a common eye condition in which the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, is damaged.
This condition can lead to blindness if not diagnosed and treated early enough.
It can affect people of all ages, but is more common among people in their 70s and 80s.
The researchers said they would offer a “sleep intervention” to those identified as having an increased risk of developing glaucoma, and that those reporting sleep disturbances should undergo eye screening.
The study, published in the journal BMJ Open, examined data from more than 400,000 people participating in the UK Biobank study.
Between 2006 and 2010, people between the ages of 40 and 69 participated in the study and were followed through March 2021 to see if they would receive a glaucoma diagnosis.
Information about their sleep habits was collected when they entered the study.
During an average follow-up period of nearly 11 years, 8,690 cases of glaucoma were identified.
An international team of academics led by researchers in Beijing, China, found that snoring and daytime sleepiness increased the risk of glaucoma by 11% compared to people with healthy sleep patterns.
On the other hand, insomnia and short or long sleep duration were associated with a 13% increased risk.

“These findings highlight the need for sleep interventions for individuals at high risk of glaucoma and the potential need for ophthalmologic screening of individuals with chronic sleep disorders for glaucoma prevention.”
