A Little-Known Cancer Screening That Matters For One-Pack-A-Day Smokers
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, accounting for nearly a quarter of such deaths in 2020.

In honor of National Lung Cancer Screening Day on Saturday, November 12, Corewell Health East, formerly known as Beaumont Health, hopes to raise awareness and encourage more eligible patients to sign up for screening. increase. The healthcare system will open additional hours throughout the day at Farmington Hills, Taylor, Wayne, Dearborn, Trenton, Macomb and Livonia hospitals.
Participants must meet eligibility requirements set by the National Lung Screening Trial and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. It includes:
- Ages 50 to 80 with no signs or symptoms of lung cancer.
- Has a history of smoking one pack a day for at least 20 years.
- Current smoker or quit within the last 15 years.
Patients should also order a screening from their doctor and call 800-328-8542 to make an appointment.
Detecting before an individual shows symptoms is paramount. Once a person develops a progressive cough, begins to vomit blood, has night sweats, unintended weight loss, and/or recurrent infections of the lungs, it is usually too late to cure the disease.

When lung cancer reaches its terminal stage, treatment includes radiation and chemotherapy, but slowing growth is more important than getting rid of the cancer.
About 200,000 Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer each year. In 2020, he had 136,084 deaths from lung cancer in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
For all types of cancer, Michigan ranked 13th in deaths per 100,000 population in 2020. It is estimated that 8,720 new lung and bronchial cancers will be diagnosed in 2022, and approximately 5,000 Michigans will die.
Screening for lung cancer includes a low-dose CT scan of the chest. According to Corewell Health, many insurance plans will cover the cost of screening for individuals who meet the eligibility criteria.
