Researchers at the University of Utah discover that blood effects of COVID-19 can cause blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes

Campbell and his team investigated 41 COVID-19 patients at the Utah University Hospital. Seventeen of those patients were in the ICU and nine of them were on the ventilator. They compared the blood of those patients with samples taken from healthy, age- and gender-matched individuals.

Recent studies suggest that patients with COVID-19 are much more likely to develop a stroke due to blood clots.

The researchers also believe that platelets interact with other cells that fight the infection, altering their function and exacerbating the infection.

“It is an important piece of the puzzle that platelets may be involved in the coagulation associated with COVID-19,” Campbell said.
