Cleveland – November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.
according to Alzheimer’s AssociationAn estimated 6.5 million Americans over the age of 65 currently have Alzheimer’s disease.
“Alzheimer’s disease is one of the main causes of dementia in older people. In fact, there are many different causes of dementia in older people, but Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause,” says the Cleveland Clinic. Neurologist James Leverenz, MD, explains.
Alzheimer’s disease It can seriously affect a person’s ability to remember, think, and organize, making it difficult to carry out simple daily activities.
This disease cannot be reversed or stopped. But Dr. Leverenz said his research is ongoing in hopes of changing that, or at least catching the disease early on its track.
He said doing so helps prevent some of the symptoms that usually occur.
As far as treatment is concerned, many treatments are already available and some new ones show promise.
“It’s probably the therapeutic area where we’re actually trying to treat the disease itself. The one we’re most excited about right now is treating amyloid plaques,” said Dr. Leverenz.
When it comes to prevention, Dr. Leverenz says people have limited control.
That said, he suggests leading a healthier lifestyle with a nutritious diet, regular exercise, and socializing.
