COVID-19 Infects Many Campers, Counselors, and Workers at Missouri Summer Camps
At least 82 Kanakku campers and workers are infected
ST. The outbreak of COVID-19 at a summer camp near Branson, Louis-Missouri continues to grow.
At least 82 Kanakku campers and workers have been infected, with the number of cases surged from 49 Friday to 82 Monday. State health officials said they are working closely with the camp.
Dr. Randall Williams, director of the Missouri Department of Health, said:
Dr. Williams said he would not recommend closing the facility where Kanakuku was infected. “I think school is very important to youth and camp is important,” Williams said.
Camp Kanakku welcomes approximately 13,000 children annually in several camps in southern Missouri. 5000 children are already in attendance. Kanakku authorities wrote to their parents, saying that all positive cases were in K-2 camps. Canceled for the rest of the period. However, it has not been completely closed this summer.
“They plan to quarantine their staff and open a shortened session if they get back a negative test,” Dr. Williams said.
He said they had plans to keep their children safe before Kanakku opened the camp, and there were plans for any outbreaks.
Dr. Jason Newland, an infectious disease specialist at the St. Louis Children’s Hospital and the University of Washington School of Medicine, has sent three children to Kanack while raising them. He said they loved it – but this year he said no to the overnight camp.
“It’s a risk when you want to go,” said Newland. “It’s probably impossible for them to plan to keep everyone safe.”
He doesn’t think that all of the infected young people will survive and be well, but he fears that if he gets home like his grandparents, he may be infected by the weak. “Later collateral damage can be a bigger problem,” Dr. Newland said.
