Cincinnati (WXIX) – A woman from Ludlow shares her story of how early lung screening saved her life.
Susan Hussien is back at Christ Hospital five weeks after undergoing surgery related to her lung cancer diagnosis earlier this year.
Hussien says her GP recommended a lung screening in early 2020, but she never had one.
“Finally, I went to primary school. [PCP] This year in 2022,” recalls Hussien. You’ve been smoking her 44 years. So I said “okay”.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Ohio and Kentucky, according to The Christ Hospital.
In June, screenings came back and showed that the cancer had started to spread locally to her lungs. On the advice of her care team, she underwent her nine weeks of chemotherapy and surgery in October.
Detecting lung cancer early can have a big impact.
Thoracic surgeon Julian Guitron replies, “It all depends on the initial stage.”
Ashley Campbell of The Christ Hospital coordinated many of Hussien’s appointments and helped guide her through the process. She also advised her to quit smoking.
“I am amazed!” Campbell said. It’s so fulfilling to know that… She doesn’t smoke, she’s happy.”
Hussien says it took her about three weeks to quit smoking after being diagnosed with lung cancer.
She now encourages her friends to quit smoking and encourage everyone to get an early check-up and follow their doctor’s advice.
Hussain will undergo more chemotherapy in December, after which he will have regular check-ups to make sure the cancer has not returned.
She is grateful to her family, faith and the care team at Christ Hospital for giving her a second chance at life.
“You always think, ‘That wouldn’t be me.’ That would be him, that would be her,” says Hussein. And yes, it can be done.
