Infectious Diseases in Montana Occur in Nursing Homes, Set Records
BILLINGS, Mon. (AP) — Billings Nursing Homes have tested 58 residents and staff positive for coronavirus, and announced that the facility has been quarantined.
Residents and staff of the Canyon Creek Memory Care community were tested on July 3 after the staff recently tested positive, Chase, a spokesman for the Kelsh community, the Washington state company that operates the facility. Salier said.
Of the 43 virus-positive residents, 2 were hospitalized and the rest remain at Canyon Creek. The facility is populated by senior citizens, including those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of memory loss, and has 55 inhabitants and 56 staff.

“This is a reality. It’s not hoax. It’s not a liberal or a Democrat. Everyone in Montana says we can’t just fall back and get sick,” Donovan said. “I don’t think we are helping it. We are now.”

The outbreak is due to the rapidly increasing number of confirmed virus cases. Health officials in Montana reported 80 new cases on Tuesday, the highest ever, but the state remains one of the lowest infectious rates in the country.
The state has aggregated over 360 confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the past week, making it the worst case since the pandemic first arrived in the state in late March. According to John Felton, Yellowstone County Health Officer and CEO of RiverStone Health, COVID-19 cases have been reported in at least seven nursing homes to date in Billings. The situation at Canyon Creek is particularly concerned because of the health problems facing the population, he said.
“We are particularly concerned because of the challenges faced by cognitively impaired people in communicating with the needs of personal hygiene guidance and predictable routines,” Felton said. .. “This outbreak seems to have begun by infected staff or visitors.”
He added that this is a “heartbreaking example” of what can happen when people don’t wash their hands, stay away from each other, or wear masks according to recommendations.
Barbara Schneeman, vice president of RiverStone Health, said no mask orders for Yellowstone County are currently being considered.
