Chicago (WLS) — November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and there are numbers to know.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 130 million adults in the United States have diabetes or prediabetes.
More than 28 million people who actually have diabetes don’t even know they have it because they haven’t been diagnosed.
“Type 1 diabetes is when the pancreas makes little or no insulin. Usually this is diagnosed in younger children, mostly young adults. Type 2 diabetes is when the pancreas actually makes insulin. But cells have a hard time using that insulin, so they take up glucose, which causes high blood sugar levels,” says Arshiya, an internist at the University of Chicago School of Medicine and associate director of the Chicago Diabetes Translational Research Center. Dr. Baig said. “Pre-diabetes, you haven’t actually been diagnosed with diabetes, but you are at risk for it. You may have abnormal levels of blood sugar in your blood, but not enough to be diagnosed with diabetes.”
Here in Chicago, the number of people with diabetes is on the rise, Baig said.
“There are probably many different reasons, some of which could probably be due to the pandemic and people staying at home, being inactive, and that is one of the risk factors. We’ve also really seen what could be turning people upside down before–diabetes to diabetes. I don’t think so.”

CDC has a community-based type 2 diabetes prevention program. Participants lost 5% to 7% of their body weight and added 150 minutes of exercise each week, according to the CDC.
It also reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 58%.
“It’s important to note that these changes can be small,” said Dr. Christopher Holliday, director of the CDC’s Diabetes Translation Division. The National Diabetes Prevention Program is very effective because you have access to trained coaches. A coach can help you make those small changes that are unique to you.”
To be eligible, you must be 18 years of age or older, have a BMI of 25 or greater, have not been previously diagnosed with diabetes, and are not pregnant.
