BC Clinical Trials Show Promising Signs for Type 1 Diabetes Treatment
For the first time in centuries of research, two participants in a BC-led clinical trial for a cure for type 1 diabetes no longer need to take insulin.
Led by BC Diabetes Founder Dr. Tom Elliott, the trial is testing the feasibility of tackling early-stage type 1 diabetes using drugs commonly used to treat Crohn’s disease.
Type 1 diabetes, the most commonly diagnosed genetic condition in people under the age of 35, causes the person’s immune system to destroy insulin-producing cells. Ustekinumab, a treatment for Crohn’s disease, more commonly known by its brand name Stelara, shows serious promise in arresting and even reversing its destruction.
Elliott said 20 Canadians have volunteered to participate and four have completed the 18-month trial since the trial began in 2021. Two of her no longer take insulin.

With small but promising results so far, Elliot and partner researchers at the Leadership Sinai Diabetes Center in Toronto and the University of British Columbia are seeking about 50 more volunteer participants. Of those, two-thirds will receive Stellara and one-third will receive placebo. Participants must be between the ages of 18 and her 35 years of age and within his 100 days of diagnosis. Trials are free, but require her 11 trips to Vancouver or Toronto.
Elliott said that once all 70 participants have completed the 18-month trial, they will have a better understanding of how effective using Stelara is.
