Brain MRI study shows ‘significant abnormalities’ up to 6 months after COVID-19
A new study based on susceptibility-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain reveals significant differences between the brainstem and frontal lobes up to six months after people were infected with COVID-19.
In this study, researchers obtained susceptibility-weighted MRI scans from 46 individuals within 6 months of recovery from COVID-19 and compared them to 30 healthy controls. Researchers identified high susceptibility values with significant clusters in the frontal lobe and brainstem of people infected with COVID-19.
According to the researchers, the frontal lobe cluster included portions of the left and right infraorbital frontal gyrus and adjacent white matter regions. They plan to present their findings next week at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in Chicago..
“These brain regions are associated with fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, depression, headaches and cognitive impairment,” said study co-author Sapna S. Mishra, Ph.D., of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (c). I’m here.
“Significant abnormalities in COVID survivors,” Mishra said, also include a cluster in the right ventral diencephalon region of the brainstem. We noted that it is associated with a variety of functions, including regulation of circadian rhythms.
To determine the potential long-term effects of these brain changes, researchers are currently conducting a longitudinal study of the same patient cohort.
