Special measles care for malnourished children: task force
After provincial health minister Tanaji Sawant met with health officials on Friday, the ministry issued guidelines to all local governments to organize vaccination campaigns and awareness campaigns against measles. In addition, the task force directed health departments to give special care to malnourished children.
Maharashtra now reports 10,234 suspected and 657 confirmed cases. There have been 13 deaths in the state, confined to Mumbai and adjoining areas.
National Observer Dr Pradeep Awate said the task force had issued guidelines to control the spread of measles.
“The task force has issued directives to spread awareness about vaccination through various state departments and volunteers from the NCC and the Indian Medical Association (IMA). “Authorities should investigate all children under the age of five who are eligible for vaccination against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR),” Dr Awate said.
He added that the task force has been instructed to take special care of malnourished children.
“Unvaccinated, malnourished children remain vulnerable to measles infection. I have instructed the health department to give it to me,” Dr Awate said.
In October and November alone this year, 2,974 special vaccination campaigns were organized by state health departments.
