December 1st is World AIDS Day
ISLAMABAD – World AIDS Day is celebrated on Thursday (December 1st) around the world, including in Pakistan, to show support for those living with the disease and remember those who lost their lives.
The 2022 theme is “Test Yourself: Achieving Equity to End HIV”.
Since 1998, organizations and individuals around the world have focused their attention on the HIV epidemic and worked to raise awareness and knowledge of HIV.
HIV affects more than one million people worldwide and remains a major global public health problem. World AIDS Day is an opportunity for public and private partners to spread awareness about the plague situation and help advance her HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care around the world. To commemorate this day, several activities will be arranged by various public and private organizations such as awareness walks, seminars and discussions to educate people about the disease.
The purpose of these events is to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS among young people and promote tolerance and acceptance of those living with the disease. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Government of Pakistan supported WHO, UNAIDS, UNICEF, UNESCO, and UNFPA, bilateral and multilateral donors, and numerous non-governmental and community service organizations. During a conversation with a private news channel, an HIV/AIDS expert emphasized the urgent need to encourage all Pakistanis to play an active role in preventing the disease.
They called for civil society, academia and the media to play an effective role in educating people about how to prevent the disease.
