40 million children will not be vaccinated against measles by 2021, report says

28 November 2022 — Measles vaccination has plummeted since the COVID pandemic, with nearly 25 million children missing their first dose of measles vaccine in 2021 and 14.7 million more did not receive a second dose. The World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a joint report.

That year, there were approximately 9 million measles cases and 128,000 deaths, with 22 countries reporting large outbreaks. Immunization interruptions ‘make measles an imminent threat in all parts of the world’ report Said.

The report notes that although measles is a highly contagious virus, it is almost completely preventable through vaccination, and global action is needed to prevent further outbreaks.

“The pandemic paradox is that while a vaccine against COVID-19 was developed in record time and deployed into the largest vaccination campaign in history, routine vaccination programs were severely disrupted, leaving millions of people Children were not getting life-saving vaccinations against deadly diseases, like measles,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “Getting immunization programs on track is critical. Behind every statistic in this report are children at risk of preventable diseases.”

According to the report, 95% of the world’s population will need two doses of the measles vaccine to achieve herd immunity. Only 81% of hers in the world have her 1 dose and only 71% have her 2 doses. These are the lowest global coverage of the first dose since 2008, the report said.

CDC Director Rochelle P. Wallenski said: “Record numbers of unvaccinated, measles-prone children were hit by immunization systems during the COVID-19 pandemic. It shows serious damage.” “While measles epidemics demonstrate weaknesses in immunization programs, public health officials are using the epidemic response to identify communities at risk and understand the causes of vaccination shortfalls. And we can provide tailored solutions to ensure that everyone is vaccinated.”
