San Diego organization joins World AIDS Day
This week, a San Diego organization held an event on World AIDS Day on December 1 to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and honor those who have died from the virus.
Locally held events included the 31st Annual Tree Light Up and Candlelight Vigil at the Hillcrest Retail Center. It was organized by Mama’s Kitchen, a San Diego non-profit organization dedicated to feeding people with HIV and other serious illnesses.
Mama’s Kitchen CEO Alberto Cortes said: “So for me, this event also has a very intimate meaning and impact.”
Sold at the event were heart-shaped ornaments that could be personalized with messages for those affected by HIV/AIDS. Proceeds from the sale of the ornaments were donated to Mama’s Kitchen.
The theme for this year’s World AIDS Day was “Test Yourself: Achieving Equality to End HIV”. The goal was to highlight the need for equal access to health care for those affected by the virus.
In developed countries, new treatments have made HIV/AIDS a chronic disease rather than the death sentence it once was. But many of her more than 13,000 San Diegan residents living with the virus face other challenges, including financial problems.
Hillcrest-based Being Alive is one such organization that helps people access the healthcare system.
“Most of our clients are forced to live below the poverty line in order to qualify for medical care,” said Shannon Wagner, executive director of Being Alive. “You can’t make more than $800 a month.”
