New study finds brains of teens pandemic physically aged

Until now, these accelerated brain changes have only been seen in children experiencing chronic adversity such as neglect and family dysfunction.

This year alone, 5,000 children visited the Emergency Department of Radhi Children’s Hospital with mental health problems.

This study was not originally designed to examine the effects of Covid-19 on brain structure.
Before the pandemic, Stanford University recruited cohorts of children and adolescents to analyze adolescent depression.
Shifting gears, they decided to compare those brain scans to those taken from children of the same age after the lockdown.
Going forward, Gotlib and his team will continue to evaluate the same teenagers into early adulthood to see if those changes are permanent.

“To see if this is ongoing or if it was a short-term reaction to the pandemic,” Gottlib said.
Jenkins says he’s eager to learn more, suggesting that researchers are looking at the brains of younger children as well as children from different socioeconomic backgrounds.
“I think anything that shows this kind of change in children’s brains leads to so many questions about the implications of how this will affect children’s futures. Is this permanent? Can this be reversed? So, I’m very interested in following along with the research and looking at this in more detail to see more come to light. said Dr. Jenkins.
