Local GP explains streptococcal and scarlet fever symptoms to reassure parents

Dr. Charlotte Hart, a local Shrewsbury-based general practitioner, spoke of a spike in Group A streptococcal and scarlet fever cases this week.
Yesterday, in a live interview with local radio station BBC Radio Shropshire, Dr Hart explained the symptoms parents should be aware of and provided pointers to the most appropriate NHS services.
Dr Hart said: Scarlet fever is usually a mild but highly contagious disease. Watch out for symptoms such as a sore throat, headache, and fever, as well as a fine, sandpaper-like pink or red body rash. On darker skin, the rash can be more difficult to detect visually, but will have a sandpaper-like feel.
“Early treatment of scarlet fever with antibiotics is important to reduce the risk of complications such as pneumonia and bloodstream infections, so if you suspect your child has scarlet fever, contact us online (or by phone). Call NHS 111 or your GP If your child has scarlet fever, stay home for at least 24 hours after starting antibiotic treatment to avoid spreading the infection to others.
