UK medical officials hail world’s first treatment for resistant leukemia.
Following the first patient to experience remission following this new treatment, a ground-breaking, world-first treatment for aggressive leukemia has been welcomed by the UK medical community.
T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, also known as Alyssa disease, was discovered in 2021 in a 13-year-old girl. However, her blood cancer did not respond to conventional treatments, including chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant.
At Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital (GOSH) in London, she participated in a clinical trial of a new treatment using genetically modified immune cells from healthy volunteers.

In 28 days her cancer was in remission and she was able to have a second bone marrow transplant to restore her immune system. She has been “well” at her home in Leicester, central England, six months after her incident and is undergoing follow-up.
“Without this treatment, Alyssa’s only option was palliative care,” the hospital said in a statement Sunday.
According to GOSH consultant Robert Chiesa, her recovery has been “very impressive,” but results will need to be monitored and validated over the next few months.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) affects the immune system’s B and T cells, which defend and fight viruses, and is the most common type of childhood cancer.
According to GOSH, Alyssa was the first patient to receive base-edited T-cells, which involves chemically altering a single nucleotide base, which is a letter in the DNA code and carries specific protein instructions.

Last week, the researchers presented their findings at the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology.
