NY Health Department expires polio emergency as samples detected in wastewater drop
New York (WABC) — New York City had some good news Monday in its ongoing efforts to keep its residents safe from polio.
The New York State Department of Health has announced that a polio emergency is no longer necessary because fewer samples of the virus have been detected in wastewater from counties of concern.
of The state of emergency was declared three months ago. After officials identified the virus in New York City and Nassau, Rockland, Orange and Sullivan counties.
It relaxed rules about who could administer the vaccine, but that expired last Thursday.
Since July, more than 46,700 doses of polio vaccine have been administered to children under the age of 18 in Rockland, Orange, Sullivan and Nassau counties.
