E-cigarettes damage critical layers of the lungs: Western, Lawson Health study
Researcher at the Lawson Health Research Institute and the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, London, Ontario. A study was conducted that found that inhaling vapors can adversely affect the pulmonary surfactant in the lungs, the critical layer that enables breathing.
In a minimal study of the effects of e-cigarettes, Dr. Ruud Berdhuisen said the London-based research team hopes to further investigate the effects of e-cigarettes on the lungs.
Berdhuisen, a Lawson scientist and professor at the University of Schurich, said: “It started a few years ago with a case study here in London that showed a patient had severe lung damage from inhaling vapes. I got
Lawson’s team found that inhaling e-liquids can damage an important layer of the lungs called pulmonary surfactant. .
They found evidence of this in their study by placing a film of surfactant inside a syringe and forcing vapor into the syringe, allowing the vapor to come into contact with the surfactant.
The researchers simulated inhaling and exhaling vapor into a syringe 30 times, much like a human inhales vape.
“After vaping, we saw a high surface tension suggesting that surfactants were not as effective in supporting proper lung function,” Schulich student, who was also the first author of the study.
After examining different types of vaping flavors, devices, additives, and nicotine, we found that some flavors, such as menthol e-liquid, had a worse effect.
Researchers also note that young adults are often targeted by e-cigarette consumers, which can lead to cigarette smoking.
“I’m young, so I’m well aware of the popularity of e-cigarettes,” says Graham. “I also have a great interest in lung research and physiology. This research piqued my interest because there is little information about e-cigarettes and surfactants.”
The team’s work isn’t done yet. Veldhuizen and his researchers plan to further study the effects of e-cigarettes on the lungs and possible treatments.
