Cape Log 21 new case, 5 deaths from COVID-19 | Coronavirus
Last week, Barnstable County added 21 COVID-19s to its cumulative total based on figures released by the Massachusetts Public Health Department on Wednesday, July 8.
The county has had a total of 1,563 cases since the outbreak began in March.
A total of 150 people died of this disease in Cape Cod. Five COVID-19s have died in the county in the past week. The same number of people died of the disease in the same region in the same week, with last week’s weekly single-digit deaths last week in Cape Cod.
Five people are being treated for this disease at a Cape Cod hospital. None of these patients have been treated in the intensive care unit.
In the Upper Cape, Bone has a total of 158 cases with a 2-week positive test rate of 1.32%. Falmouth has 204 cases and the incidence is 1.38%. Mashpee has a total of 64 cases with an incidence of 1.10%. Sandwiches occur in a total of 95 cases and 0.61%.
There are 140,961 confirmed cases throughout the state, with approximately 1.16 million nasal swab tests being performed. A total of 8,028 people died of illness in Massachusetts.
Of the total number of confirmed cases in the state, approximately 90% are reported to have recovered. Across the state, 2,586 people are isolated from the disease.
The state average rate of positive tests is less than 2%, but there are eight communities in states with higher than average test rates. The amount of tests processed in these communities is also decreasing.
Governor Charles D. Baker, Jr., said these communities have initiatives through mid-August to promote testing. The test is provided free of charge to people in the towns of Lowell, Lawrence, New Bedford, Everett, Fall River, Chelsea, Lynn and Marlborough.
At a press conference on July 2, I asked the governor for his views on the federal government, which threatened to withhold funding to the states that decided not to open the school in the fall. He said the decision to reopen school should not be a one-size-fits-all approach. Massachusetts called on the district to develop three educational plans in the fall.
