Flu activity remains high but shows signs of slowing in parts of US, CDC says

The flu season, which hit the United States early and hard, is showing the first signs of a slowdown in parts of the country.

For the first time this season, flu hospitalizations decreased week by week. The week after Thanksgiving was the worst of the season, data Influenza hospitalizations fell by 10% in the weeks that followed, according to a paper released Friday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nonetheless, influenza activity remained high across the country, which is not a sign that influenza has reached its peak. Similar to last week, all but seven states continue to have “high” or “very high” respiratory virus activity, according to the CDC.

The holiday season is also well underway, with experts warning that holiday gatherings could increase the spread of respiratory viruses.

As of December 10, the CDC estimates there have been at least 15 million illnesses, 150,000 hospitalizations and 9,300 flu deaths this season.

The cumulative hospitalization rate this season is higher than it was more than a decade ago. Even with signs of improvement, millions more were infected and thousands more died last week.

Health leaders continue to emphasize the importance of vaccination, especially as Covid-19 rises again and strains hospitals.

Dr. Ashish Jha, the White House Covid-19 Response Coordinator, said Thursday:

Uptake of both the latest Covid-19 booster shots and the annual flu vaccine is lower than experts would like.

Only about 40% of adults and 46% of children have been vaccinated against influenza this season, well below the 70% target rate set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in their Healthy People 2030 Plan.

On Friday, the CDC also released new estimates of adult flu vaccination coverage. This indicates that whites (45%) and Asians (47%) have much higher vaccination rates than blacks (33%) and Hispanics. (28%) and American Indian (26%). Coverage of pregnant women (44%) is significantly lower than in the last two seasons, with coverage in rural areas lagging behind urban and suburban areas.

Influenza vaccination coverage among older adults is high, with 64% vaccinated this season, but still not enough for groups at particularly high risk of serious consequences from influenza. About 88 people are hospitalized per capita, which is almost three times the average hospitalization rate.

Children under the age of five are hospitalized with influenza 1.5 times more often than the general population.
