Survey finds growing opposition to compulsory vaccination in schools against measles
A growing number of parents oppose requiring routine measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccinations for their children to attend school, according to a new study released Friday by the Kaiser Family Foundation.
The survey found that 35% of parents with children under the age of 18 oppose mandatory vaccination in schools. That’s up from her 23% in 2019.
All states and the District of Columbia require children to be vaccinated against certain diseases, such as measles and rubella, in order to attend public schools, but allow exemptions in certain circumstances.
The growing opposition follows bitter partisan battles over mandatory COVID-19 vaccines and distrust of public health officials.
A survey found that 28% of all adults said parents should be able to choose not to vaccinate their children, even if it poses a health risk to others, and in 2019 Up from 16%.
As is the case with the COVID-19 vaccine, the growing opposition comes primarily from those who identify as Republicans or skinny Republicans. The survey found that 44% said parents should be able to opt out of her MMR vaccine during childhood, up from 20% for her in 2019.
In contrast, 88% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning supporters said they support requiring vaccines for public school students, little changed from 86% in 2019.
But the change appears to be directed more toward opposition to mandates than to the shooting itself. Currently, 85% of the public and 80% of parents say the benefits of measles, mumps and rubella vaccines outweigh the risks, and 88% of the public and 83% of parents feel so. Little has changed since 2019.
63% of adults who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19 say parents should be able to decide not to vaccinate their children, even if it poses health risks for children and adults.
About 1 in 4 unvaccinated adults say the risks of the MMR vaccine outweigh the benefits. But even within that group, there was still 70% who said the benefits of the childhood MMR vaccine outweighed the risks.
The survey was based on interviews with a nationally representative sample of 1,259 adults and was conducted between November 29th and December 8th with a margin of error of 4 percent.
Besides the childhood MMR vaccine, the survey also asked about bivalent COVID-19 booster shots.
About 22% of adults said they had already taken the recommended bivalent booster shots, and 16% said they would get them as soon as possible. The bivalent booster covers both the original he COVID-19 strain and the omicron COVID-19 strain, and has been available since September.
About a third of people over the age of 65, the most vulnerable age group, think they don’t need it. A similar share said they didn’t think the benefits of the updated booster were worth it.
About 23% of vaccinated adults over the age of 65 said they didn’t get the latest booster because they were too busy or didn’t have time to get one yet.
Amid reports of a spike in flu and RSV cases among young children, parents are at least as likely to worry about their children falling ill with these diseases as they are with COVID-19. , which means that COVID-19 is no longer a single concern but is becoming part of the normal seasonal viral cycle.
Nearly half of parents say they are at least somewhat concerned that their children will catch RSV (56%), influenza (51%) or COVID-19 (47%).
