LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (WDRB) — Health officials and Gov. Andy Beshear are encouraging Kentuckians to get a flu shot after six flu-related childhood deaths were reported.
According to the news release, the death toll has already surpassed the previous record for childhood flu deaths reported so far in a single flu season in Kentucky. Three of his flu-related deaths occurred last week.
“This is a milestone we don’t want to cross, and our prayers go out to each of these families mourning the loss of a loved one,” Beshear said in a news release. We strongly recommend getting vaccinated as soon as possible to protect yourself from the flu and COVID.”
Public Health Commissioner Dr. Stephen Stack says the current flu season is Kentucky’s worst in at least a decade. The Kentucky Department of Public Health said the child who died during the current flu season had not been vaccinated against the flu.
