Ohio doctors battle RSV, Covid-19, flu before Christmas

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – Physicians in northeastern Ohio are battling a “triple disease,” also known as the combined threat of RSV, Covid-19, and influenza.

A local family is a serious reminder to take health seriously. They know firsthand how sick you can get and warn that it can ruin your holiday season.

“I couldn’t breathe, I was coughing all night, and I couldn’t sleep for three weeks. I had to sit and sleep,” said Susan Allen.

It’s been a nightmare three weeks. Thomas Allen and his wife Susan Allen describe their experience catching RSV:

The couple told 19 News they were nervous about potentially landing in the hospital again.

“It was the worst illness I can remember,” said Susan Allen.

Dr Kristin Schmotzer of University Hospital said doctors have seen more patients walk through the door with serious illnesses in the past few weeks.

“Three viruses at once. What we need to do to keep everyone safe,” Dr. Schmotzer said.

Some diseases, she said, are spreading at a faster, more worrying rate.

“Influenza is definitely something that’s been on the rise lately. It’s something that’s really picked up in the last few weeks and is infecting a larger proportion of the population,” said Dr. Schmotzer.

She said she expected a spike in cases in the new year because of the holiday gathering.

“Be really careful and think about whether you have any symptoms and when it’s best to stay at home and not go to those social settings,” Dr. Schmotzer said. “Masks are very effective in stopping the spread.”

Mr. and Mrs. Allens said they keep Christmas gatherings small.

If you have difficulty breathing or have severe symptoms, you should go to the emergency room.

If you have mild symptoms, doctors recommend going to emergency care.
